The 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route is one of the most popular and rewarding ways to reach the summit of Africa's highest mountain. Often referred to as the "Whiskey Route," the Machame Route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, diverse landscapes, and higher summit success rates compared to shorter itineraries.
Beginning on the southern side of the mountain, this route takes climbers through dense rainforest, dramatic moorlands, alpine deserts, and glacial summit zones before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak.
The seven-day itinerary follows the important "climb high, sleep low" principle, giving trekkers more time to acclimatize and significantly increasing their chances of reaching the summit successfully.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with an early morning briefing before departing from Moshi to Machame Gate. Upon arrival, registration formalities are completed while your mountain crew prepares equipment and supplies.
The trek officially starts through the lush rainforest zone. Towering trees, dense vegetation, and forest-covered trails provide a magical introduction to Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail can be muddy, especially during the rainy seasons, but the gradual ascent allows your body to begin adjusting to the altitude.
After several hours of trekking through this rich ecosystem, arrive at Machame Camp where the crew will have tents prepared and warm drinks waiting.

Wake up to your first mountain sunrise and enjoy a hearty breakfast before continuing the climb.
Today's trek leaves the rainforest behind as the landscape transforms dramatically into moorland terrain. The trail becomes steeper, offering increasingly spectacular views across the Shira Plateau and surrounding valleys.
As you gain elevation, the scenery becomes more open and rugged, providing excellent opportunities for photography and appreciating the scale of Kilimanjaro.
Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon where you can rest and enjoy the magnificent mountain environment.

This is one of the most important acclimatization days of the entire climb.
After breakfast, continue ascending toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation located high on the mountain. The gradual climb allows your body to adapt to the thinner air while exposing you to the alpine desert environment.
Lunch is often enjoyed near Lava Tower before descending toward Barranco Camp. Although you finish the day at a lower altitude than the highest point reached, this "walk high, sleep low" approach is crucial for successful acclimatization.
Barranco Camp sits beneath the imposing Barranco Wall and is widely regarded as one of the most scenic campsites on Kilimanjaro.
Distance: Approx. 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Highest Altitude: 4,630 m
Ending Altitude: 3,960 m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mountain Camping – Barranco Camp
After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, one of the highlights of the Machame Route.
Despite its intimidating appearance, the climb is non-technical and manageable with guidance from your experienced mountain team. Some sections require using both hands and feet, adding excitement and a genuine mountaineering feel to the adventure.
Once at the top, enjoy breathtaking views before continuing through valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.
This shorter trekking day provides additional acclimatization benefits and allows time for rest before the summit push.
Distance: Approx. 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Starting Altitude: 3,960 m
Ending Altitude: 4,035 m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today's trek brings you to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the high alpine desert zone. The air is thinner, temperatures are cooler, and the reality of summit night begins to set in.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, lunch is served before you spend the afternoon resting and preparing equipment. Your guides conduct a comprehensive summit briefing and explain what to expect during the climb to Uhuru Peak.
An early dinner is provided before heading to your tent for a few hours of sleep.
Distance: Approx. 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Shortly before midnight, you will begin the most demanding yet rewarding part of the journey.
Moving slowly beneath a sky filled with stars, you ascend toward Stella Point. The pace remains steady as your guides monitor the group closely and provide encouragement throughout the climb.
As dawn approaches, continue the final section to Uhuru Peak, standing at 5,895 meters above sea level.
Reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable achievement. Celebrate with photographs, embrace the emotion of standing on Africa's highest point, and take in the breathtaking views above the clouds.
