The 6 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climb offers one of the most unique experiences on Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike the popular Machame and Lemosho routes, the Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border, providing a quieter and more peaceful trekking experience.
The Rongai Route is widely known as one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro and is particularly attractive during the rainy seasons because the northern side of the mountain receives less precipitation than the southern slopes. It combines gradual ascents, diverse scenery, and excellent wilderness experiences while allowing climbers to descend via the Marangu Route, giving them the opportunity to see two different sides of Africa's highest mountain.
This route is ideal for travelers seeking solitude, beautiful landscapes, and a slightly gentler ascent profile while still embracing the challenge of summiting Mount Kilimanjaro.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with an early breakfast in Moshi before departing for the northern side of the mountain. The drive to Nalemoru Gate takes approximately 3–4 hours, passing through local villages, farmlands, and beautiful countryside near the Kenyan border.
Upon arrival, registration formalities are completed while your guides and porters organize equipment and supplies. Following a final briefing, begin your trek through pine forests and open woodland.
The Rongai Route offers a completely different atmosphere compared to the busier southern routes. The trail is peaceful and quiet, allowing climbers to fully immerse themselves in nature. During this section, it is sometimes possible to encounter wildlife such as colobus monkeys.
After several hours of steady trekking, arrive at Simba Camp situated on the edge of the moorland zone.
Take time to relax, enjoy warm drinks, and admire your first evening on Kilimanjaro.
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Starting Altitude: 1,950 m
Ending Altitude: 2,625 m
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mountain Camping – Simba Camp
Wake up to spectacular mountain views before enjoying breakfast prepared by your mountain crew.
Today's trek follows a gradual ascent through open moorland landscapes. Unlike the dense rainforest experienced on other routes, the Rongai Route quickly opens into wide panoramic scenery with impressive views across the Kenyan plains.
The first stop is at Second Cave, where climbers can rest and enjoy lunch while appreciating the increasingly dramatic surroundings.
From there, continue ascending toward Kikelewa Camp. As the trail climbs higher, giant groundsels and alpine vegetation begin appearing across the landscape.
The gradual pace of today's hike plays an important role in helping your body adapt to the increasing altitude.
Upon arrival at camp, settle into your tents and enjoy another evening beneath Kilimanjaro's star-filled skies.
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours
Starting Altitude: 2,625 m
Ending Altitude: 3,630 m

After breakfast, begin one of the most scenic sections of the Rongai Route.
The trail becomes steeper but rewards climbers with extraordinary views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro's dramatic and jagged volcanic cone. Many climbers consider this area among the most beautiful on the mountain.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp sits beneath towering cliffs surrounded by an alpine landscape unlike anywhere else on Kilimanjaro.
Because the hiking distance is relatively short, the afternoon provides valuable acclimatization time. Climbers can rest, explore the nearby surroundings, and appreciate the breathtaking scenery.
This additional recovery time often contributes positively to summit preparation.
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Starting Altitude: 3,630 m
Ending Altitude: 4,330 m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mountain Camping – Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Today's route crosses the broad saddle situated between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak.
The terrain gradually transforms into alpine desert characterized by rocky trails, sparse vegetation, and expansive open spaces. The feeling of isolation and wilderness becomes increasingly pronounced.
Although the climb is not technically difficult, the altitude becomes more noticeable, making slow and steady pacing essential.
As you approach Kibo Hut, Uhuru Peak appears closer than ever before.
Upon arrival at camp, lunch is served before the remainder of the afternoon is dedicated to rest and preparation.
Your guides conduct medical checks, review summit strategies, and ensure everyone is mentally and physically prepared for the upcoming summit attempt.
An early dinner is provided before retreating to your tents for a few hours of sleep.
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours
Starting Altitude: 4,330 m
Ending Altitude: 4,700 m

Shortly before midnight, you begin the most challenging and rewarding stage of the entire expedition.

Your guides maintain a careful pace while continuously encouraging the group and monitoring everyone's condition.
As dawn breaks across East Africa, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
Standing at 5,895 meters, Uhuru Peak represents the highest point on the African continent and the culmination of months of preparation and personal determination.
Celebrate this extraordinary achievement, capture unforgettable photographs, and embrace one of the most emotional moments of your life.
